Prepositions

A preposition is a word that relates a noun or pronoun that appears with it to another word in the sentence.

It shows relationships between separate things, including location, direction, cause, and possession.

 

She passed the ball over the defense.

He was underneath the basket.

She dribbled into the lane.

The foul occurred before the shot.

Prepositional Phrases

ê  Consists of a preposition and a noun or pronoun (called the object)

o   The squirrel ran up the tree.

o   The squirrel fell off the branch.

o   We went after school.

o   I threw the ball to you.

 

Underline the prepositional phrases in the following sentences.

  1. The library will hold the books until tomorrow.

  3. A prop plane with several passengers made an emergency landing in a cornfield.

Prepositional Phrases

A prepositional phrase is a group of words that includes a preposition and a noun or pronoun.

The noun or pronoun generally found after a preposition is called the object of the preposition.
